Para peneliti dari Costarica dan Meksiko melakukan identifikasi terhadap jenis vanili tabg bisa mensubsitusi Vanili planifolia.  Menggunakan pendekatan komprehensif melalui analsisi morfologi dan DNA kamudian dilacak ciri spesifik dari varietas yang ada di Pantai Caribbean di Costa Rica menemukan V. sotoarenasii sp. nov.

Dari hasil riset tersebut V. sotoarenasii sp. Nov memiliki banyak kesamaan dengan V. planifolia dan V. × tahitensis dibandingkan spesial vanili untuk genus yang sama. V. sotoarenasii sp. nov. memiliki ukuran lebih kecil untuk berbagai indikstor seperti batang, daun, bunga dan buah dibandingkan dengan V. planifolia dan V. × tahitensis, serta memiliki bentuk daun yang berbeda.

Sementara untuk Bungan V. sotoarenasii sp. nov. lebih cenderung putih dibandingkan V. planifolia, yang lebih kehijauan. Sementara untuk kadungan senyawa aroma pada buah matang, adapun komponen pembentuk aroma, V. sotoarenasii sp. nov. sangat berbeda dengan dengan V. planifolia.

Secara khusus buah V. sotoarenasii sp. nov. cenderung lebih sedikit kandungan vanillin and dan mengandung senyawa anisyl. Setelah matang aroma dari spesies ini berbeda dengan V. planifolia dan lebih mirip dengan V. pompona atau V. × tahitensis.

Tentu upaya penemuan spesies vanili yang memiliki kemiripan dengan V. planifolia perlu dilakukan apalagi yang memiliki morfologi bunga yang memungkinkan terjadinya persilangan sendiri dan memungkinkan terjadinya persilangan secara hybrid. Pasalnya Indonesia juga memiliki kekayaan plasma nutfah untuk genus vanili
